Simple answers to the questions we expect most often.
How do I open Private Space?
Open the three-dot menu on the main notes screen and select Private Space. The first time, set up a PIN. Later, enter the PIN or use biometrics if you enabled Face ID or Touch ID.
Where are my notes stored?
Notes are stored on your iPhone. Ordinary notes and attachments are stored separately from the encrypted Private Space vault. Nook Notes has no required account or app-operated cloud server.
What if I forget my PIN?
There is no online reset or master key. If an existing biometric unlock works, you may still be able to access the vault. A separately exported encrypted backup can be restored using its correct recovery key. Otherwise, your private files may be permanently inaccessible. Support cannot recover keys or PINs for you.
How do I back up my regular notes?
Open the main three-dot menu, then Settings & Appearance. Under Regular notes backup, create a recovery key and export an encrypted copy. Save the recovery key securely, separate from the file.
How do I back up Private Space?
Unlock Private Space and open Security & Backups from its menu. Generate a recovery key and export the encrypted vault. Restoring on a replacement device requires creating a new vault/PIN first, then importing with the original backup key.
Can I use Nook Notes without internet?
Yes. Creating, finding and editing notes and opening Private Space work offline. Manually exporting to a cloud service requires whatever connectivity that service needs.
How do I change light or dark mode?
Open the three-dot menu on the normal notes screen and choose Settings & Appearance. Select Follow iPhone, Light or Dark.
Why won't my private video play?
The current version limits newly imported private videos to 40 MB, and some codecs may not play in the in-app player. Exporting a file that you own may allow playback in a compatible app, but doing so creates an unencrypted copy. Treat exported content carefully.
Will uninstalling remove my content?
Uninstalling can remove local app data and Private Space files. Before uninstalling or switching phones, create and verify a recoverable backup, including its recovery key. Ordinary device backups may behave differently from manual vault backups.
How do I report a bug?
Email [email protected] and include the app version, iOS version, device model, and non-sensitive steps to reproduce the issue. Please do not include private notes, photos, PINs, recovery keys, or backups.
